Go Green!

The Philadelphia Eagles are doing something no other company in the world has ever done. They are reimbursing their employees living in the Philadelphia region and New Jersey for purchasing wind energy. This effort is part of the Eagles' Go Green campaign which launched in 2003.

I have taught high school economics, but not once have I considered the economic, social and environmental impact of sporting events. Until today.

Eagles Ownerette, Christina Lurie put it best:

"The topic of greening in sports is especially important in cities like
Philadelphia with professional teams and sports arenas. Game days have
a huge environmental impact considering traffic, trash, energy and material
consumption, and water use. They are also opportunities for education and
awareness."
I'm impressed. I liked the Eagles organization before. They created a winner. They created additional fervor for this team. They brought in a state of the art facility. They really made their customers very happy. Now I'm even happier to know that they too, are giving back.

Considering the aforementioned environmental impact of game days in the NFL, it is nice to see some actual statistics of the reverse impact wind energy can have.

Purchasing 300 KW of PECO wind energy, is like planting 268 trees every year, or not driving 3,600 miles less. Times that by the number of employees that participate, and the Eagles have planted thousands of trees and saved tens of thousands of miles on the road.

Kudos to the Luries and the Eagles for a job well done. Keep up the good work. Now let's concentrate on winning.

This is fantastic. I hope the Eagles forward thinking rubs off on other companies. They truly deserve credit for this. Thanks for finding it.
